Grenada History

Grenada, 3 separate islands located in the Caribbean also known as the Grenadines, has an account with many cultural influences from all over the world. Although there aren’t many countries that they have been in contact with, the ones that they have are very influential. The French, English, and Americans have added plenty to the Grenadine islands. The French and English have added to the population by transferring slaves to the islands. That slave population made up a 2 to 1 ratio when compared to the Europeans. These slaves were mainly used to grow cash crops. Power transferred between the French and British 4 times because of how the French did not follow the instructions of the peace treaties. Finally Britain gained complete control for many years until the revolution of 1979 led by the New Jewel Movement of the People’s Revolutionary Army. With the help of the United States, the Grenadine islands became a democracy with a prime minister, Maurice Bishop. These encounters with different cultures developed into the language, food, religion, currency, etc. The official language of the islands is English with a French patois. Although I have not been able to try it yet, unfortunately, their signature dish is known as Oil Down, much like Gumbo soup. Christianity is the main religion, much like the United States, Britain, and France. Finally their currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, trickled down from the U.S. dollar. The Grenadine islands have become a close replica of the countries that have established them.
